PLO 6 & 7 -- Assessment and Evaluation Using Technology

Week 4 assignment: Assessment and Evaluation Using Technology
The following paper is going to discuss and demonstrate attainment of PLO 6 “technology resources to facilitate effective assessment and evaluation” and PLO 7 “Utilize technology to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings.”  Then a redesign an activity that uses instructional design principles and theories will be completed.
When it comes to knowing if the students are retaining the information that is being taught an effective assessment is the only way to make sure that this is happening.  When looking at the completed assessment the instructor will be able to judge if the students have retained the information.  The instructor then can decide if the information is going to need to be reviewed or if they need to revise their original lesson.  Assessments are used to help the instructor or their lessons be more effective, which is important to the success of their students.
Original Assignment
For this part of the assignment I have chosen to use the week 3 assignment from EDU/652.  The original assignment was to prepare a rubric that would be used for the students to look at to make sure that they are completing the assignment correctly.  It was also to help them understand how they were going to be graded whether they were doing the work basically or proficiently.  Upon finishing my rubric, I was then directed to complete a learning assessment for the students to complete.
For the learning assessment, I chose to have the students break down into equal groups.  The students then would take turns answering questions.  When the game was complete the students then would be graded on their participation as well as how many questions they got correct.  When I was preparing the rubric for my lesson which was a game like “Jeopardy”, I found it to be a little bit frustrating in the beginning until I understood what was expected.  I then had to really think about what I was trying to accomplish and what I wanted the students to know.  I felt that doing a game such as this would help the students retain the information along with having fun doing so.  Once this lesson was completed the students each got a rubric on how they did throughout the game.
I was also instructed to complete a learning assessment for the students
Revised Assignment
This lesson will have the students break down into 4 small groups of 5 students.  Each of the students will take turns answering the questions in the “Jeopardy” game.  The game will be played on the smartboard and another instructor will keep score so the instructor can complete the rest of the tasks.    At the end of the game the students then will have to write a short essay about how they felt the game helped them remember the information.  If they felt that the game did not help them they then could give suggestions on how to improve it.  At the end of the day the students will be graded on their participation throughout the game, how many questions that they answered correctly, and their short essay.
When it comes to assessments in the learning process they should be part of every educators teaching process.  When looking at the use of technology and assessments it can be a very useful tool to gather information as well as recording the grades of the students.  It is important to use technology in the assessment process so that the instructors can create meaningful assessments.  It will also help the students gain the best education possible.
